The Lourizán Forest Research Center is pleased to invite you, next Thursday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. to the Technical Conference that will be held in the same center:
The possibilities of the in vitro culture technique as a tool to accelerate the transfer to the sector of new specific rootstocks compatible with IXP varieties, for new crops
This conference will explain how the use of propagation techniques in in vitro culture can accelerate the process of transferring pathogen-free plants with a high capacity for vegetative multiplication to the sector. The possibilities of a new generation of more promising rootstocks will be shown, due to two characteristics: greater compatibility with the Galician chestnut varieties, and better adaptability to the climatic conditions of the target areas of the new olive groves. Throughout the day, the possibilities of multiplication and transfer of the new clones destined for chestnut rootstocks will be discussed, followed by a visit to the propagation facilities. Finally, through an open dialogue, an attempt will be made to collect the contributions or points of view of the attendees on the current problem, with the aim of reaching common ground that facilitates collaboration between professionals related to the world of chestnuts.

IXP CASTAÑA DE GALICIA participates in the GREENCASTANEA pilot project
Modernizing chestnut cultivation through biotechnology and multiproduction is the main objective of GREENCASTANEA. A new project focused on innovation in the agri-food sector with which IXP CASTAÑA DE GALICIA continues to strengthen its role as a catalyst for outreach and communication activities in the field of R & D & I. GREENCASTANEA will have a budget of almost € 190,000 and European and regional funding, and will last for two years. In Galicia, as well as in other territories, chestnut trees constitute autochthonous ecosystems, contributing great wealth and biodiversity to the traditional landscape.
In addition, they are one of the most economically profitable crops. However, traditional methods of grafted chestnut production are not very efficient and do not allow to meet current demand. Therefore, it is essential to achieve profitable and sustainable systems that allow a greater production of the plant, of higher quality and guaranteeing its health.
The GREENCASTANEA pilot project seeks to modernize chestnut cultivation through the implantation of an innovative culture chamber for the growth and acclimatization of hybrid chestnut clones obtained in vitro that will be grafted with traditional IXP varieties (Indication Xeográfica Protexida Castaña de Galicia). Obtaining these varieties will be carried out by professional producers in the sector through an intravarietal selection based on superior characteristics demonstrated in the field (productivity, size, resistance to diseases ...)
On the other hand, in order to improve the profitability of the "souto" through its multifunctionality, before being potted, the chestnut trees will be mycorrhized with an inoculum of Boletus edulis produced by means of a novel bioreactor system. In addition, a thermohydrotherapy system will be incorporated to disinfect the plant material used in the graft, guaranteeing the absence of the chestnut wasp, a pest with a high incidence today and other possible phytosanitary problems.
Finally, in a demonstrative experimental plantation, the characteristics and performance of the chestnut trees obtained will be evaluated. In this way, GREENCASTANEA is committed to micofruticulture and the diversification of the agroforestry sector, an approach that will allow managing an efficient, flexible and quality production of chestnuts and mushrooms, two products of great economic value. In short, taking care of the indigenous and keeping the rural environment alive.
The project, which will end in July 2023, is led by Hifas da Terra and in it, in addition to IXP CASTAÑA DE GALICIA, the University of Vigo (through the Agrobiotech For Health Group), the Indicación Xeográfica Protexida (IXP) Castaña participate de Galicia and the company Soutos Sativa SL GREENCASTANEA is funded by the call for grants to support pilot projects, development of new products, practices, processes and technologies in the agroforestry field, 75% co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), within the framework of the Rural Development Program (PDR) of Galicia 2014-2020. Rural Environment Department. Forest Health.
The Galician Damage Monitoring Network, integrated into the State and European Network, offers a detailed analysis of the health status of the forest stands of 257 plots distributed throughout the territory that have a notable representation of species to determine detection, evolution, disease and pest status, in a localized and periodic way over time, with technical criteria that allow testing and controlling the samples sampled.
Plant health contingency plans also address possible pests that affect, on a timely basis, certain species or areas in order to mitigate their consequences.
Among these plans, due to their importance, the treatments carried out by the Ministry to combat two serious conditions of chestnut trees in Galicia stand out: the sight of Drycosmus kuriphilus and cancer disease (Cryphonectria parasitica).
As regards the chestnut wasp, in 2015 an experimental biological control program was started by releasing, in thousands of points throughout Galicia, Torymus sinensis, a natural and specific enemy of the chestnut wasp that lays its eggs inside the bougainvillea.
In relation to cancer, in 2003 the Xunta de Galicia, in collaboration with the Diputación de Pontevedra through the Apatiro Photopathological Station, carried out biological fight research based on the search for less virulent fungi (hypovirulent strains) that could be reduced the virulence of the attacking (hypervirulent) strains. Next, a biological control program was developed through the preparation in laboratories of the hypovirulent inocula of the strains detected in Galicia and their subsequent application in the field. Inoculations began in 2011, and the results obtained were very satisfactory. The total number of chestnut trees treated in all Galicia already exceeds 100,000 copies ".
In addition, at the Areeiro Phytopathological Station they develop methods of fighting pests and diseases of forest species and stands with advanced technologies and qualified personnel, in order to be able to study new termination procedures and efficient treatments, thanks to an agreement signed with the Ministry of Rural Environment. Among others, a biological control program for chestnut cancer (Chyphonectria parasitica) is carried out through the application of hypovirulent strains detected in Galicia and it is in the process of preparing a control program adapted to Galician conditions and carrying out tests in the field and in the laboratory to corroborate its effectiveness against these pests.
In the specialized informative field, the Arobriculture Days are organized, in which environmental factors are analyzed, research related to forest health is exposed and we proceed to identify and diagnose xylophagous fungi that affect the various tree species, among others. "

XI Edition of the Excellence Awards for Innovation for Rural Women.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food convened this initiative that seeks to value the work and life projects of women in our rural environment and the essential work they do to maintain and revitalize these territories, through the recognition of projects excellent, original and innovative.
In this year's call, which has a total endowment of 150,000 euros, four categories are recognized, in each of which a first, second and third prize is awarded:
1. Excellence in innovation in agricultural activity.
2. Excellence in innovation in fishing or aquaculture activity.
3. Excellence in innovation in the diversification of economic activity in rural areas or rural coastal areas.
4. Excellence in communication.
To these categories is added the Special Prize for the trajectory linked to the support of women in rural areas, with an honorary recognition.

Open the deadline to request aid to new registrants in the PGI.
From today, the new members incorporated to the GPI Castaña de Galicia seal of quality will be able to submit the request for aid granted by the Ministry of Rural Affairs. As a novelty this year, it is the producers themselves, both natural and legal persons, who must make this request electronically on the link to the Xunta online headquarters, where the necessary documentation to manage the aid is indicated. Thus, unlike previous years, the Regulatory Council will not be able to process applications on behalf of those registered in the GPI Castaña de Galicia.
The deadline to present this aid ends on May 15 and includes as a eligible period from May 1, 2019 until April 30 of this 2020. As in the call last year, only applications that exceed 50€ will be accepted.

Brochure "Tolerancia á Avespa do Castiñeiro".
From the Center for Forestry Research (CIF) of Lourizán comes his latest publication, the booklet entitled "Tolerance to Cassava do Casteiro (Dryocosmus kuriphilius) in traditional varieties of froito and interspecific hybrids".
After a first set-up of the technique and the first experimental analyzes in which different degrees of tolerance were already indicated for the different resisitent vegetable materials evaluated, the CIF of Lourizán offers in this informative brochure a classification of MFR hybrids of traditional varieties according to the presence or not of resistance and its degree of tolerance to the attack of the chestnut wasp.

Recipe contest "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia".
In collaboration with the Aula de Cocina Porto-Muíños we call the eigth edition of our recipe contest. The competition is aimed at foodies, hospitality students and gastronomic bloggers living in Spain. The recipes must be original and of own elaboration, being the CASTAÑA DE GALICIA and its flavor the main ingredient of the dish that is going to elaborate. Recipes must be original and homemade, with Galician Chestnut and its taste the main ingredient of the dish to be processed.

Press Release: Meeting of the chestnut sector.
The meeting, represented by PROAGROSILGA (Association of Producers and Exporters of Agricultural Products of Galicia) and the PGI Castaña de Galicia, was held yesterday at the Cross-Border Business Center of Barbadás (Ourense).
The meeting was attended by Civil Guard (Colonel D. Calixto Villasante) SEPRONA (Lieutenant D. Pablo Medela) and representatives of the Consellería do Medio Rural of the Xunta de Galicia (José Antonio Bouza and D. Abel Yáñez) to try to collaborate and get solutions to the increase of product theft and intrusism that has been detected in recent years. The producers and marketers request help from the Civil Guard and this calls for citizen collaboration so that when people or suspicious vehicles are detected, they call immediately. This year an effort will be made to establish a greater presence of agents in the most conflictive areas, especially when we are in full campaign.

Doctoral Thesis on Chestnut.
Beatriz Míguez Soto, under the auspices of the Forest Research Center of Lourizán, will read her doctoral thesis next July 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hall of the Forest Engineering School, University Campus of A Xunqueira in Pontevedra.
The thesis is entitled "Adaptive variability of European chestnut populations (Castanea Sativa Mill.) And estimation of genetic parameters for the development of the Chestnut Forest Genetic Improvement Program in Galicia". Beginning of the preparations for the elections of the new vowels.
The elections for the renewal of the governing bodies of the Regulatory Council for the Protected Geographical Indication Castaña de Galicia, as well as the other Regulatory Agrifood Councils of Galicia, will be held on Sunday 9th July. Published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday April 27, 2016 the inclusion of 16 traditional grafted varieties in the Register of Commercial Varieties.
The varieties are: Amarelante, Branca, De Parede, De Presa, Famosa, Garrida, Inxerta, Longal, Loura, Luguesa, Negral, Picona, Puga of Afora, Raigona, Rapada and Ventura.
The impact on the marketing of nursery plants and activities necessary for certification should be analyzed. In the coming months a day will be held to clarify the various aspects to unwrap certification.

Invitación a la final del V Concurso de recetas "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia".
Desde el Aula de Cocina Porto-Muíños y la IGP Castaña de Galicia, queremos invitaros a la final del V concurso de recetas "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia", que tendrá lugar el próximo lunes, 28 de abril de 2015 a las 19 horas en el aula de cocina Porto-Muíños.
Este día los finalistas defenderán las recetas seleccionadas ante un jurado que escogerá la "mejor receta de castaña" tanto dulce como salada y la "mejor receta de estudiantes", y hará la entrega de premios.
Además tendrá lugar un sorteo de lotes de productos gallegos de calidad entre el público asistente al evento.

Finalistas V Concurso "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia".
Desde la IXP Castaña de Galicia y el Aula de Cocina nos alegramos un año más por la gran participación en esta nueva edición del concurso de recetas, para resaltar el sabor y la calidad de un ingrediente tan nuestro como la castaña de Galicia y su uso en la cocina durante todo el año.

Comenzamos con la V Edición del Concurso "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia". El concurso está destinado a aficionados a la cocina, estudiantes de hostelería y bloggers gastronómicos residentes en España.
Entrarán en concurso todas las recetas recibidas hasta el 2 de marzo de 2015, tanto por correo electrónico como postal, en las siguientes categorías, recetas dulces, recetas saladas y estudiantes de hostelería, como novedad en las categorías.
En esta edición se contará con 6 finalistas.
Se valorarán la originalidad, sabor, presentación y técnicas empleadas.
Y, como siempre, la Castaña de Galicia debe ser uno de los ingredientes principales de las recetas, originales y de elaboración propia.

Finalistas del IV Concurso de Recetas "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia".
Desde la IGP Castaña de Galicia señalar la gran respuesta de los participantes en esta nueva edición de "Cocina con Castaña de Galicia", donde la principal protagonista es la Castaña de Galicia, su sabor y su calidad, en todas sus variedades.
Después de recibir un gran número de recetas, solo podemos agradecer el gran interés mostrado. Una edición más estamos sorprendidos descubriendo nuevas, múltiples y sabrosas posibilidades de nuestra castaña, tanto dulce como salada. Sin embargo, debido al elevado número de recetas recibidas, su alta calidad y la imaginación que mostrasteis, fue muy difícil la selección de los 4 finalistas. La castaña tiene futuro
COREN comenta que la alimentación porcina para su nueva gama requiere "UN MILLÓN DE KILOS DE CASTAÑAS AL AÑO", por lo que si se cumplen las previsiones de la empresa, "dentro de cinco o seis años" podría consumir "entre seis y ocho millones de kilos de castañas", lo que "generará una sinergia dentro del campo gallego" para replantar "unas 11.000 hectáreas" de este tipo de árbol". Homenaje a D. José Posada, Vicepresidente de la IGP Castaña de Galicia.
Encuadrado en el marco de la asamblea de la IGP Castaña de Galicia y tambiñen de PROAGROSILGA, entidad promotora de la denominación de origen, se celebró una cena homenaje a D. José Posada González, fallecido el pasado enero a los 72 años de edad, en el mesón "Casa de María Andrea", donde se entregó un detalle conmemorativo del sector a su hijo.

Feria Gourmet 2013.
El 9 de abril en Gourmet 2013, la Indicación Geográfica Protegida Castaña de Galicia, junto con la IGP Ternera Gallega y Vinos de la D.O. Ribeira Sacra presentó una serie de platos elaborados con productos de los tres Consejos Reguladores.
Este mismo día la empresa Miguel Areán e Hijos, S.L. presentaba su nuevo producto de castañas precocidas "O Castiñeiro", elaborado con IGP Castaña de Galicia.

- A Conselleira do Medio Rural e do Mar clausurou esta mañá a presentación dos resultados do proxecto "Cambio da estructura varietal dos soutos para revalorizar a producción da IXP Castaña de Galicia".
- Galicia é unha potencia na elaboración e comercialización de castañas, cun volume de negocio de preto de 30 millóns de euros anuais.
- A Consellería do Medio Rural e do Mar pretende crear a Mesa da Castaña, que será a segunda Mesa de producto forestal que se cree na Comunidade.
